Artificial Intelligence in Video Games | Types, Uses, and Real-World Examples

AI in games simulates the behavior of virtual entities such as enemies, allies, or non-player characters (NPCs). These behaviors include reacting to the player, making decisions, social interactions, and even learning from player actions.

Reactive AI only responds to the current situation without considering past or future events, like enemies attacking when you get close. Deliberative AI, on the other hand, uses planning and modeling to make the best decisions in complex scenarios, such as in strategy games.

No, Learning AI is mainly useful for games with complex structures or dynamic behaviors. For simpler or arcade-style games, Reactive or Scripted AI is sufficient and often more efficient.

With Social and Learning AI, it’s possible to simulate human-like behaviors to a great extent. However, achieving truly human-level behavior requires highly advanced data and algorithms and is not yet fully realized.

Social AI is ideal for simulation games like The Sims because it can realistically simulate behaviors, emotions, relationships, and dynamic dialogues.

Optimizing AI design depends on the game style, hardware capabilities, development time, and desired player experience. A combination of Scripted AI for control and Deliberative or Social AI for interaction often produces the best results.
